The cost of a precast project is decided long before anything is cast. Precast engineering and design is where panel splits, connection types, lifting arrangements and erection sequences are settled — and where the difference between an efficient package and an expensive one is quietly locked in. Solid Home Buildings runs this work with an in-house technical department, so the people designing your components are the same people who will manufacture and install them.
Our engineering team produces detailed shop drawings, structural calculations, connection details, lifting designs and value engineering proposals for precast and 3D modular projects across the Kingdom — including for clients who use us for design and manufacturing only, with their own contractor handling erection.
Why Precast Engineering Is a Discipline of Its Own
Precast is not cast-in-place concrete moved indoors. A site-cast structure is monolithic by default; a precast structure is an assembly of discrete pieces that must be manufactured, demoulded, stored, transported, lifted and connected — and each of those stages imposes its own loading, often more severe than the in-service condition the architect was thinking about.
A panel may be perfectly adequate standing in a finished wall and still crack while being lifted from a mold at an unfavourable angle. A connection may be structurally sound and physically impossible to access with a crane holding the piece in place. These are precast-specific problems, and they are solved by precast-specific engineering — not by a general structural design handed to a factory.
Our Engineering Services
Detailed Shop Drawings
Complete manufacturing and erection documentation for every element: dimensions, reinforcement layouts, prestressing details, cast-in items, lifting inserts, surface finishes, tolerances and unique piece marks. These are the drawings the factory builds from and the erection crew installs from, so ambiguity in them becomes rework on site. We produce them to a level of detail that leaves nothing to interpretation.
Structural Design and Calculations
Design of precast elements for all governing load cases — in-service loading, demoulding, handling, storage, transport, lifting and temporary erection stability. Calculations cover flexure, shear, torsion, bearing, punching and crack control, in compliance with the Saudi Building Code and applicable international standards.
Connection Design
Connections are where precast structures succeed or fail. Our engineers design bearing details, welded and bolted connections, grouted joints, corbels, dowels and cast-in plates for strength, ductility, tolerance absorption and — critically — buildability. A connection that cannot be reached, aligned and completed safely at height is not a connection; it is a future variation order.
Value Engineering
This is where we deliver the most measurable client benefit. By reviewing your design against manufacturing and erection reality, we identify savings that do not compromise the building: rationalising panel sizes so fewer mold changes are needed, adjusting spans to reduce section depth, standardising connection types across the project, splitting elements to suit transport limits, and reducing the number of distinct piece types.
On a typical project these adjustments are invisible in the finished building and significant in the final account. They are also only available before manufacturing starts, which is the argument for engaging engineering early rather than issuing a design for pricing.
Lifting and Handling Design
Specification and positioning of lifting inserts, calculation of dynamic lifting loads, rigging configurations and centre-of-gravity determination for every element. This is a safety-critical deliverable: incorrectly designed lifting arrangements are among the most serious hazards in precast construction, and our designs are produced and checked accordingly.
BIM and 3D Coordination
BIM services for clash detection, MEP coordination, erection sequencing and constructability review. Modelling the structure before it exists catches interface problems — a duct route through a structural panel, a connection fouling a service riser — at the point where they cost a drawing revision instead of a site cut.
MEP Coordination
Our in-house MEP engineering coordinates conduit routes, sleeves, boxes, penetrations and cast-in provisions so services are built into elements at the factory. That removes site chasing and drilling, which damages elements, delays trades and undermines the durability you paid for.
How Early Engineering Protects Your Project
Fewer Site Surprises
Problems resolved on a drawing cost a few engineering hours. The same problems discovered with a crane on standby cost a day of plant, a stalled crew and a knock-on delay to every following trade. Thorough shop drawings are the cheapest risk mitigation available on a precast project.
Faster, Safer Erection
Elements designed with erection in mind install faster and more safely. Sequencing that accounts for crane reach, temporary stability and access means the site crew is never improvising at height.
Efficient Manufacturing
Designs that respect mold capability, casting orientation and curing cycles produce shorter production runs and lower unit costs. Engineering that ignores factory reality produces elements that are technically correct and expensive to make.
Tolerance Management
Precast elements are manufactured to tight tolerances, but foundations, in-situ works and adjoining structures are not. Good detailing deliberately builds in tolerance absorption at the connections, so real-world dimensional variation is accommodated rather than fought on site.
Compliance and Documentation
Full calculations, drawings and specifications support approvals, inspections and handover documentation — and give you a defensible record of how the structure was designed and why.
Projects and Systems We Engineer
- 3D monolithic modular buildings — module splits, structural design and connection detailing up to G+2.
- 2D precast structures — walls, columns, beams, slabs and stairs.
- Hollow core flooring — span design, bearing details, opening design and topping specification.
- Sandwich panel envelopes — wythe connector design and thermal detailing.
- Boundary walls and retaining structures — post spacing, panel design and foundation loading.
- Architectural precast — facade detailing, finish specification and fixing design.
Working With SHB Engineering
We can be engaged in several ways depending on how your project is set up. Some clients bring us in at concept stage to advise whether precast is the right system at all and to shape the design around it. Others hand us an approved architectural and structural design to convert into manufacturing documentation. A third group uses our engineering and factory output while managing erection with their own crews.
The earlier we are involved, the more value we can add — not as a sales position, but as a straightforward consequence of when decisions become expensive to reverse. A panel layout is free to change in week one and costly to change once molds are committed.

Discuss Your Project With Our Technical Team
Send us your architectural and structural drawings and our engineers will review them for precast suitability, identify value engineering opportunities and outline a design programme. If you are evaluating whether precast or modular construction fits your project at all, that review is the most useful conversation to have first.
